Administrative Officials, such as Deans, Principal Investigators, Department Chairs and Directors, are responsible for ensuring a strong commitment to the humane care of all vertebrate animals used at UCSC for research, teaching, and training.  Accordingly, each Administrative Official is responsible for adhering to the following principles and responsibilities:

Principles

A. Sensitivity and concern regarding the need for humane care and treatment of animals must be promoted among faculty and staff.
B. Individuals responsible for the care of laboratory animals must be knowledgeable about federal, state, and local policies and regulations governing the care and use of laboratory animals.
C. Sufficient administrative and financial support for animal use in research and instruction must be provided to ensure that high standards for animal care remain an institutional priority.



Responsibilities

Operating a successful animal care and use program means:
A. complying with federal, state, and local policies and regulations governing the care and use of laboratory animals, especially the U.S. Government Principles for the Utilization and Care of Vertebrate Animals Used in Testing, Research, and Training
B. maintaining open and cooperative communication between investigators, the Chancellor's Animal Research Committee, and animal resource personnel
C. supporting and establishing efforts to educate the lay public, the media, and political and governmental officials about the need for animals in research and instruction, and the relevance to human and animal health, advancement of knowledge, and the good of society
D. establishing procedures related to countering an assault upon appropriate animal use, which has the potential to threaten the integrity and reputation of the institution
E. consulting with the campus' Government and Community Relations officials and Public Information representatives regarding responses to inquiries about research being conducted at UCSC, particularly demonstrations or other activities of animal rights organizations
